In the Footsteps of Ravilious

Robert Littleford and Rachael Adams examine the sense of place of the Sussex landscapes of war-artist Eric Ravilious.

They are deep-mapping the area in and around Newhaven – at present concentrating on the port, fort and harbour – but will span out into the surrounding tracks and chalk paths of the downs (Glynde, Firle, Cuckmere): landscapes made so familiar over 80 years ago by Ravilious.

Such a deep map goes beyond simple landscape/history-based topographical recording to include and interweave autobiography, archeology, stories, memories, folklore, traces, reportage, weather, sound, natural history, science, and intuition.

Regular exhibitions and Story-Maps reveal their creative response.
