In the Footsteps of Ravilious

Robert Littleford and Rachael Adams examined the sense of place of the Sussex landscape made familiar by Second World War-artist Eric Ravilious.

They deep-mapped an area in and around Newhaven, concentrating on the port, fort and harbour, before spanning out into the surrounding tracks and chalk paths of the South Downs (Glynde, Firle, Cuckmere). The project developed into Ebb+Flow, a film purporting to be about the Lower Ouse Valley’s River.

Deep mapping goes beyond simple landscape/history-based topographical recording, it includes and interweaves autobiography, archaeology, stories, memories, folklore, traces, reportage, weather, sound, natural history, science, and intuition.

Exhibitions and Story-Maps (below) reveal the mapping of the landscape.
